Engineering Students Get To Operate Rotating Recovery Truck
During late April, Chris Boughen of Saunders Recovery arrived at Easton College in the mighty Volvo FH-520 Globetrotter fitted with Millers 75 tonne rotating crane which was lovingly installed at Boniface Engineering.
This heavy duty monster is usually at home alongside the M25 ensuring that the road remains moving - but for a change of scenery the truck had made its way to the hidden gem in Norfolk’s crown that is Easton College.
The purpose of the visit was to help further educate the large number of students that the college houses, particularly the welding, fabrication and hydraulic principles that they learn on their courses and how they are
transferable throughout differing industries. The truck ran demonstrations all day long, displaying the awesome power of the rotator as it swung the 7.5tonne potato harvester
'Bertha' high above the crowd. Chris demonstrated the art of
'slinging a casualty', balancing a load and then wowed the crowd with the use of 3 winches as he lifted and positioned the harvester into various poses.
The truck took pride of place in the large machinery yard in between the existing engineering workshops and the soon to be completed Agricultural Engineering Workshop

Another Delivery From
Boniface’s One Stop Shop
Following
its launch at the Professional Recovery Tow Show, Boniface has
recently supplied this impressive Mercedes Actros to Gallows
Wood Recovery via their “One Stop Shop”. Nick Curtin the
M.D. of Gallows Wood, took full advantage of the facilities on
offer - part exchanging an older vehicle, sourcing his finance
using a special rate set up between Boniface and Singers Asset
Finance and finally buying the Mercedes from Boniface. Since
taking delivery of the new Mercedes, Nick has re-painted the
vehicle to reflect his company’s image and colour scheme. He
commented “although it’s only been on the road for a few
days, it has already been hard at work doing some long runs
into London and the drivers are all impressed with the
vehicle”. The
Mercedes is fitted with an Interstater Mk6 and Maxireach
Lowline H underlift. It also benefits from a Pioneer axle
which gives it excellent lift and tow performance and a deluxe
stainless steel body which will ensure the vehicle looks great
for years to come. Gallows Wood is a long standing customer of
Boniface and has always been impressed with the performance of
the Boniface equipment. Alongside this new Mercedes, Gallows

Richford Expands With New Vehicles
And A New Depot
With
depots in Alfreton, Cossall and Huthwaite working for both
Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Police as well as private
customers and the more well known recovery clubs, Richford
Motor Services are a busy operator. To compliment their
recovery business, they also run some impressive workshops,
MOT testing station and an insurance approved bodyshop all of
which have a requirement for quality recovery vehicles to keep
things moving.
Due
to the success of the business and as part of their continued
expansion, Phil Richford recently opened another depot in
Tuxford (Nottinghamshire) to cope with the extra work load. He
has also added yet another two trucks to their ever expanding
fleet of light and heavy vehicles, this time a Citroen based
T35 transporter from Boniface which can be driven by anyone
with a car driving licence without the need for a tachograph
and a new Mitsubishi Canter fitted with 2nd
generation Champion aluminium slidebed from Boniface which
makes light work of police jobs and everyday recovery.
Richford Motors have owned and operated both types of vehicles
for a number of years and have been impressed by their
performance in both difficult and often demanding situations.
Phil Richford commented “the T35’s we have owned in the
past have provided excellent fuel economy which is an
important factor in the current economic climate. They are
also very simple to use and get the job done quickly as they
are not speed limited. The Champion slidebeds have proven
themselves time and time again to be tough and reliable. We
use them in all aspects of the business from Police jobs to
collecting and delivering customers cars for the workshop and
bodyshop.”

BONIFACE OFFER 5 YEAR PAINTWORK GUARANTEE
Pictured is one of the first heavy units to have the Akzo Nobel 5 year paint guarantee, with Akzo Nobel paying for the cost of repair for any paint faults for 5 years, this is done on a sliding scale, and the items covered are: Significant colour change, Crazing, Cracking, Adhesion, Lifting, and Chalking.
The nominated paint shops working with Boniface are all happy to carry out the stringent preparation and paint process required to meet the high quality standard that Boniface and Akzo Nobel insist on.
The nominated paint shops have bought into this scheme and have agreed to use Akzo Nobel products from degreaser right through to top coat and clear coat, giving body work that ‘car finish’ - something which is becoming more common on today’s high value vehicles.
The paint process is laid down in a document that is sent to all the nominated paint sops which they must adhere to. This document covers the entire paint scheme from preparation of the body work to the final top coat and finishing, there are even differing work instructions for the boom to the body work and differing levels of preparation for inside and out side the lockers. Azko Nobel Auto coat products are used from the BT 800 degreaser through to the BT 800 Wash primer to the BT LV filler and P280 sand paper. The top coat is then applied which is Auto Coat BT LV 351.
As with all Boniface Heavy bodies Speed liner is fitted to the inside of the locker system, this gives the inside of the lockers a bright finish but with the advantage of being durable to withstand tough use.
Pictured below is Wakefield Autos latest edition to their ever growing fleet, Lea Wakefield sourced the late secondhand chassis and Boniface fitted a Recoverer Trident H Low-line complete with Side-winder 3/1 and the new for 2011 Super Deluxe stainless steel body - brimming with features that have become a trademark of Boniface Engineering’s dedication to making the highest quality Recovery Equipment available anywhere in the world today.

TEAM EFFORT
Boniface
Engineering proudly handed over a batch of 4 Recoverer Tridents
sold through their Finnish distributor, Lähdekorpi - Invest Oy.
Matias, the CEO had owned a Century 7035 himself for several years
and saw an opportunity to sell more recovery equipment in Finland
and appreciated the quality equipment produced by both Boniface in
England and Miller in the USA. Handing over 4 brand new units was
the culmination of sales effort by all 3 companies, (Boniface,
Miller and Lahdekorpi), and a stunning location in the central
city of Jyvaskyla was chosen to take some publicity shots prior to
the units heading to their respective locations throughout
Finland. The Recoverers were individually specified but included
the Boniface Lowline H boom, stealth flyers, robust aluminium
bodies, extra heavy duty grids and numerous other features to
enable them to cope with recovering the toughest casualties in the
harsh conditions of a Finnish winter. To demonstrate his
enthusiasm for the Boniface built product one of the owners even
painted a Union Jack on the roof of his cab!

Interstater
the Desert Fox
Boniface
Engineering was able to secure a contract with its German
distributor Wolfgang Brechtel for 14 Interstaters for the Middle
East on an off-road 8x8 Mercedes Benz chassis. The Interstater has
been chosen because of its durability and its maximum towing
capacity on minimum weight axles. An Interstater is designed to
allow a heavy-duty towing capacity with a minimum distribution of
the equipment weight on the back axles.
The interstater
is equipped with an F-Type underlift and two Sepson winches type
H200P. To increase the versatility of the recovery unit, a
Palfinger PK15500 was installed which acts as a crane as well as a
counter ballast for the interstater to increase the stability of
the vehicle whilst towing.
The Interstater
which was made in the UK, enjoys a high international reputation
and we are looking forward to seeing the vehicle cope in the
desert of the Middle East.

Take
That’s giant robot has a Boniface.
It’s
not everyday that you are asked to build a 20 meter tall robotic
man for the up coming Take That concert tour. So
when said event transpired at Boniface Engineering on Christmas
Eve only hours before the factory shut down for the holidays, the
mood became even more festive.
This
type of project although peculiar was not totally unexpected.
When long time friend to Boniface Engineering Andy Edwards
from the stage production company Brilliant Stages was still
developing his idea of a giant robotic man he struck upon two key
aspects, they would need a very large and very strong
telescopically extending boom and a trailer to form the basis of
the project. Andy knew a man with both, so approached Mike Boniface with a
proposal.
Boniface
Engineering’s role on the project was to modify a Montracon
trailer to accept one of their Century 1075 rotator recovery booms
that would eventually become the back bone of the creation you see
in the pictures.
As
you would imagine, show-business is an interesting and fast paced
game but the excellent team of people at Boniface allowed them to
deal with the large and slightly off the wall challenge set by the
Brilliant Stages designers. Firstly
they had to modify the trailer from a fixed three axle flat bed
trailer to a hydraulically extending two axle unit. They then
installed telescoping air and electrical systems, a second lift
axle and all the controls in the process to create the platform
for the giant robot. Then
came the interesting part, Boniface are more than familiar with
the installation of their recovery
truck booms but Brilliant Stages quite literally turned that on
its head by mounting the 1075 Rotator Boom the opposite way up!
The Boom itself was a bespoke build for the project by
Boniface’s parent company Miller Industries in the USA.
The boom was joined to a specially designed pivot which was
fabricated at Boniface by their experienced fabrication team who
relished the challenge, particularly when told that it may be the
highest profile welding they would do in their careers.
The
build has since been completed following collaborations with
contractors including Hydrastore, Warren Services and Kinesys.
The giant robot, named “OM”, was pulled out on his
trailer for rehearsals with the band at the beginning of May.
There
was a great deal involved in the build and almost every department
at Boniface was utilized. Fabrication,
body building, heavy equipment installation and finishing shops
were all called upon to complete a job that all are very proud of
and although the tour got off to a celebrated start on the day of
the first show the guys at Boniface were all as nervous as
expectant fathers.

Midhurst
Engineering
Midhust
Engineering of Midhurst West Sussex had a requirement for a
versatile spec unit that would suit the company’s needs. Guy,
Mike and Brian Morgan visited the IFRS show in
Hungary
earlier this year and were impressed by the various units
demonstrated – particularly the little Ford F450.
The
deal was struck with Brian over a drink or two and was sealed with
a hand shake.
The
Ford F450 was fitted with a Century Midnight Express manufactured
at our
Chattanooga
facility and shipped to the
UK
. Guy Morgan the operator of this unit specified the truck and
equipment to a high level and has had many features added to make
it a truly stunning vehicle. This truck will be on display at the
European Tow Show in
Telford
on the 30th September and 1st October 2011 so come along and visit

Thamesdown
Transport
Thamesdown
Transport are one of the leading bus operators in the South West
and had very specific requirements when specifying their new
recovery vehicle. Thamesdown had long had a Vulcan V60 underlift
machine on a
Leyland
chassis and were happy with the service this unit had given them
over the years, so it was no surprise when Bob Gillespie from
Thamesdown Transport wanted the Vulcan product again. Bob was very
specific in his wish list and Boniface were able to build the
vehicle to his exacting requirements.
A
Vulcan V70 with a Euro style underlift and crosshead was installed
onto his Scania chassis and a 2011 Super deluxe stainless steel
body was crafted to suit the high Scania cab.
A
host of specialist bus and coach equipment was fitted and stowed
allowing easy access to ‘most used’ lift equipment through one
door and keeping the day to day operating equipment to the
nearside leaving the offside to house the recovery equipment
suited to those bigger, less frequent winching jobs.
A
new colour scheme was developed to which the sign writing will be
added soon to finish off this eye-catching truck.

Fuel Efficient T35 Heads
For Nottingham
Nottingham
Breakdown were recently looking for a small, economical, cost
effective vehicle capable of recovering small cars and
motorcycles. Being a long standing customer they were already
aware of the T35 aluminium slidebed produced by Boniface and after
a brief discussion with their midlands based Sales Engineer,
decided that the T35 was the ideal vehicle to meet their
requirements.
This
very useful Citroen based T35 transporter utilises OEM parts
fitted to a new galvanised Boniface chassis which incorporates the
body subframe keeping the overall height and loading angle to a
minimum. Air bag assistors are fitted into the suspension with a
small compressor and gauge fitted inside the cab giving the driver
complete control over the ride and handling of the vehicle when
loaded with a casualty.
The
T35’s bed is manufactured in a similar manner to the larger
capacity Champion slidebeds providing an exceptionally strong,
durable bed. It also features the same low approach initial
section which makes moving cars with low spoilers easy. Other
standard features include rear ground contact rollers that prevent
body damage, 5,000lb electric winch, work lights, chassis mounted
locker box and cab mounted beacon. The bed and winch are fully
radio remote operated for ease of use whilst keeping the operator
at a safe distance from the vehicle.
As
with all Boniface products there are a wide range of accessories
available to fully customise the T35 to your exact requirements.

Boniface
Engineering in Germany
Boniface
Engineering supported Miller Industries at its first
representation at the IFBA - the German tow show in Kassel. The
IFBA is seen in Europe as one of the most well established Tow
shows in Europe. Boniface Engineering provided Miller Industries
with two show trucks - a slidebed and a rotator to present to the
crowd. The slidebed was a EURO CHAMPION with a 5 meter bed and a
second car lift on an IVECO 70C17 Crew Cab truck which has a high
payload and low fuel consumption. The other vehicle is the brand
new Century Rotator 1140 with SIDEWINDER legs and four stage rear
outriggers. This combination provides maximum stability with
rotator power. The German and international recovery operators who
visited the IFBA were very pleased with the products that Boniface
Engineering had manufactured to their usual high quality finish.

School
Class at Boniface
It
was a special day for a few lucky students of Wymondham College
who spent an unconventional afternoon at Boniface Engineering.
Ahead of this visit, Boniface Engineering has been working
with Year 12 students at Wymondham College regarding the
importance of a second language in today's business environment.
As part of this "practical" course programme the
students have translated the Boniface Engineering profile into
German for the new website and a technical product data sheet.
These exercises were to reinforce the benefits of a second
language and how it might be used within a business environment as
well as being a key advantage to securing employment in a very
competitive job market.
The
students came to see for themselves how important the link is
between language skills and technical knowledge and that you can
use languages in many different employment areas (not just
straight translating). The visit was conducted by General Manager,
Jackie Rix and Austrian-born European Sales Project Engineer,
Irvin Gaigg. Boniface was happy to provide a more practical
insight to college students where the knowledge of technical words
in a second language is of immense importance to, for instance,
closing deals with international customers or suppliers.

FREE TRUCK!
If
you’re used to running a 7.5 tonne slidebed vehicle then buying
a T35 is like being given a free truck! It’s a very odd
statement to make but if you take a closer look at the figures it
really does make sense.
Here
are the facts;
The
Boniface T35 transporter
built onto a front wheel drive Citroen Relay chassis with 2.2
litre HDI 120 engine will cost you £24,500 + VAT. This includes
all the standard equipment - the tough aluminium slidebed that
allows motor cycles, cars and damaged vehicles to be winched onto
the vehicle, a fully galvanised chassis and sub-frame, a 5000lb
electric winch, a plastic chassis mounted locker box, a set of
deluxe soft eye transporter ratchet straps, a beacon mounted to
the cab roof and a pair of work lights.
The
Citroen Relay comes with a
3 year / 100,000 miles warranty. According to the official
fuel consumption figures from Citroen, (given in their brochure
– click
here to download), this model of Citroen Relay will average 32
miles per gallon. Given that everyone drives differently, we will
assume a slightly lower figure of 30 miles per gallon.
If
we also assume that the larger vehicle (possibly a 7.5 tonner or
10 tonner) will average 17 miles per gallon the Citroen will use
2549 gallons less fuel over the same 100,000 miles.
With
diesel at £1.35 per litre, this 2549 gallons of fuel equates to
£15,635.00.
It
is interesting to note that for every 1p per litre fuel increases,
this fuel saving increases by over £100.
It’s
like being given an extra truck for FREE!
On
the various web sites at the present time, there are 56 and 57 reg
Citroens for sale at over £10,000 +VAT. If you assume that you
sold your vehicle at 3 years old for £10,000 having done your
100,000 miles (which is easily done) the
vehicle has cost you nothing!
New
Vehicle cost
£24,500.00
Fuel
Saving
£15,635.00
Sale
of vehicle after 3 years
£10,000.00

BONIFACE 5T EUROCARRIER ‘’BUILT TOUGH’’
The
all new 5t capacity Champion Euro carrier has been launched with a
number of new features to give the operator the edge in today’s
tough market. Strength
and reliability are paramount with this product and are reflected
in the build quality and design of this ‘built tough’ unit.
Heavy
duty side rails, larger capacity deck planks, heavy duty
galvanised subframe and 2t second car lift make this unit ideal
for the 12t chassis range. The
7m bed length and a full 4960 kg capacity enables this
chassis/equipment combination the ability to cope with today’s
large vans thus giving the operator the benefit of a multi-tasking
vehicle capable of carrying a full range of cars and large vans.
Roy’s
Autos of Barnsley, Yorkshire have taken delivery of the first unit
and have added a number of extra options to further improve the
versatility of the unit - including a sliding winch BS 14492
compliant and side mounted capstans for those interesting jobs off
road. New style lashing rings are fitted to the bed making
strapping the casualty vehicle down an easier task and, by adding
extra lashing rings, giving the operator more flexibility when
loading casualties.

BONIFACE
– BUCKING THE TREND
So
often we read in the paper that the UK imports much more than it
exports and in particular the growing amount of imports from
China; additionally we hear that China has overtaken Japan as
being the world’s second largest economy. Bucking the trend – the pictures show the first of 2
Rotators recently mounted onto Mercedes chassis despatched to
Jiangsu Province in China. This
is not the first time Boniface Engineering have exported to China;
working with a Hong Kong based distributor, Miller Rotators, both
the 1075 (75t capacity) and the smaller 1060 (60t capacity) have
been supplied into China for use on new roads and bridges –
particularly in Jiangsu Province, which is one of the richest
Provinces. This particular unit - a Miller 1060 Rotator mounted on
a Mercedes 4144 8 x 4 chassis - was shipped out in January and a
1075 mounted onto the same chassis but also fitted with the
Boniface Maxireach Lowrider H Boom will follow in February.
It is indicative of the importance the Chinese put on
technical expertise, quality of build and high specification
equipment that this Boniface/Miller/Mercedes combination wins over
the local competition. It
is a combination that has proved itself over many years use on the
roads and bridges throughout both Hong Kong and China.
Another
factor which influences customers around the world to choose
Miller products is the range of options and features that enable a
product to be produced that matches a particular requirement or
environment, for example, there are four types of front leg
arrangements each with it’s own unique advantage. Firstly the
original leg with the side extension tubes mounted above the
chassis, this is the standard and the entry level stabiliser and
only available in one size of outreach, 5.4m, alternatively there
are two lengths of under slung leg the longest having a spread of
6.6m. The under slung, or H beam legs as they are known, allow the
operator to work over the leg or to extend a leg below a crash
barrier both features greatly adding to the Rotator’s
versatility. The fourth style is the Sidewinder or XP leg, the
original developed in the UK and subsequently adopted in the USA.
This leg will fit usefully on to shorter European 4 axle
chassis, it is shaped to fit over the second steering axle and
when deployed gives a huge amount of side winching capability.
There
are also a wide range of winch options from which to choose.
Boniface have installed and engineered products to have as many as
8 winches, each can be deployed simultaneously providing lifting,
hauling, precise load management and increased stability. Rotators
with 4 boom winches, possibly 2 x 30 tonne main winches and 2 x 10
tonne turret winches, can be used to control a roll.
In the hands of experienced operators we have seen
casualties gently lifted from where they have crashed and
carefully lowered back to a position to be towed.
Like
most countries the majority of work done by recovery vehicles in
China is towing, and it is the performance of the Maxireach or
Lowrider boom, as it is branded in the USA, is another reason that
Boniface wins business internationally, with 30 years of
experience in making underlifts these low profile booms are the
best available worldwide; the striking unit on the front cover is
on active duty in Spain. Manufactured from the most sophisticated
steels and fabricated in a unique way they reach over 4 metres
from the tailgate and will lift 9 tonnes at full extension with
only 70mm deflection. Each
boom is tested for lifting performance and deflection, it is the
secret way that Boniface build these booms that limits the give
under load.
Boniface
has provided many products to China over the last 15 years and
they are confident that for the reasons explained in this article
and the reliability of the products that there will be more
business in the future.

Boniface Introduce Exciting New Products For 2011
It’s
a well known fact that Boniface are constantly at the forefront of
innovation within the recovery industry, producing products that
are recognised and used worldwide by operators ranging from small one
man operations through government departments and the military. Their
R&D department has helped produce many of the now standard products
used by the industry. Specific examples developed over the years include
the Maxireach Lowline underlift boom which provides an impressive 9
tonnes capacity at a reach in excess of 4.2m, the 12.5t Pioneer axle
which provides exceptional lift and tow performance when used with the
Mk6 Interstater and the introduction of stainless steel into the
fabrication of light and heavy recovery bodies eliminating the problems
of corrosion which used to be a major issue within the industry. As
you’d expect from a World Class manufacturer, there is always
something new going on at Boniface and 2011 is no exception.
The
Champion aluminium slidebed is another success story. Proving itself
over the years the Champion slidebed has been used for club work,
re-deliveries and on the most demanding of Police and Highways Agency
schemes all over the country. It’s 3.5t capacity aluminium
construction has proved tough enough to cope with severely damaged,
burnt out and overweight vehicles whilst maintaining a good clean image
for the operator. Over the past few months, Boniface in conjunction with Miller
Industries has developed a new Champion product. As you read this, the
first new 5t capacity aluminium Champion bed is being fitted to a 12t
Renault Midlum crew cab. This new bed will increase the carrying
capacity of the vehicle by approximately 1,500Kgs over a comparable
Chevron aluminium bed which up until now was the product of choice for
this size of chassis. The
new Champion 5t bed boasts similar features to the 3.5t bed including a
galvanised steel subframe, radio remote for the winch and a host of
optional extras which can be used to tailor the product to your
individual needs.
For
those of you who require a Very Low Approach angle, Boniface are about
to build the prototype of their new 5t capacity VLA slidebed.
This is a brand new engineering product undertaken by their
R&D department to bring a fresh new design to the market place
featuring a purpose built 5t aluminium bed in a range of lengths and
widths suitable for the most popular 12-15 tonne chassis cabs. The new
VLA will feature single lever operation, have a flat deck with removable
side rails and include as
standard a fully galvanised subframe, manually sliding 8000lb hydraulic
winch, 2t capacity 2nd car lift and offer a substantial
increase in payload over other models.
Pricing information for this exciting new product will be
available shortly.
There
are numerous other projects under way that will be unveiled by Boniface
during the course of 2011. |

Boniface
Supply Bell's First New Heavy
Bell
Truck Services which are based in Beverley, East
Yorkshire, are a successful family run business who has
operated from their current premises in Beverley for over
30 years. They have owned and operated heavy recovery
vehicles for a number of years and after careful
consideration chose Boniface to supply their first ever
new heavy recovery vehicle. Speaking with Robin Bell,
he commented “in the past we have had new equipment
built onto a used chassis, but this is our first ever
brand new heavy truck”. Robin first saw his new vehicle
on a Boniface stock list. It was being built as a show
vehicle which would showcase a host of new innovative
features and designs from Boniface such as their new chain
and strop carousel, Quick Step, Stealth flyer with
Environment Lighting and their latest 2010 Deluxe
stainless steel body with remote central locking. This
impressive looking Renault Kerax is fitted with an equally
impressive heavy duty underlift and top recovery boom
manufactured by Boniface's sister company Jige
International. The Mega 45 underlift also boasts rear
stiff legs, power tilt facility and twin heavy duty
winches. To maximise its lift and tow potential, the Mega
45 was fitted with the Boniface Maxireach Lowline H
underlift boom giving exceptional lifting performance at a
reach of over 4m making the recovery of low spoilered
vehicles, buses and coaches easy.

are always at the forefront of recovery technology and
innovation. The 2010 Super Deluxe body is designed to keep
the operator safer at the roadside by making everyday
items available on the nearside of the vehicle reducing
the chance of injury from passing traffic. It is just one
of several new developments which emerged from this World
leader in 2010. With more new products and innovations

Another Champion For Wales
Sharon
& Ian Mathews of Lynwood Garage in Aberystwyth were recently
in the market for a new crew cab slidebed to serve their current
AA and other additional organisation commitments. They were
looking for a vehicle capable of moving 4500Kg vans and during a
visit to a Boniface demonstration day at Bruntingthorpe, got a
great deal on a new Renault Midlum fitted with Champion
aluminium slidebed.
Ian
spent some time looking around the vehicle and was impressed by
the numerous accessories and advanced features of the slidebed
such as a low winching facility to the spectacle lift, a
casualty winching off facility on the bed, full LED lighting
including work lights, beacons and vehicle lights and full radio
remote control. The vehicle was also fitted with the latest
style of Boniface manufactured locker with up and over doors and
built in stowages. Sharon
liked the overall look of the vehicle and after a short period
of time drove a hard bargain with Lea Pearson, the Sales
Engineer for their region and eventually the deal was done.
Boniface delivered the vehicle to Wales soon afterwards and
received a very warm and friendly welcome from Sharon, Ian and
their staff. Both Sharon and Ian had very positive things to say
about Boniface and the level of service they had received from
the company. Sharon
was particularly complimentary about the excellent after sales
service they had received when ordering parts for an older
Century slidebed. Visitors
to this year’s European Tow Show can see their new large
stainless steel slidebed lockers for themselves and discuss
their custom stowage requirements with a member of the Boniface
team. Boniface
always strives to exceed the expectations of their customers and
always have a wide range of parts and accessories in stock. If
you are looking for a new vehicle in the near future, or require
parts for an existing one give them a call, after all Boniface
are “very nice people to deal with”.

BONIFACE
& HAMMOND GROUP “NOW AND THEN”
A
W & D HAMMOND of Halesworth Suffolk have long been customers
of Boniface Engineering and they had one of the first
Sidewinders along with a SBTE machine mounted onto a 6x4 ERF.
This vehicle has been a great servant to the company and it was
an easy decision to seek the assistance of Boniface Engineering when specifying a new vehicle.
Boniface
had a Renault Kerax in build which suited their needs and when
Tim Warne (Hammonds Recovery Manager) saw the vehicle at the
AVRO show in Droitwitch his mind was made up – it was fitted
with a Recoverer Trident with the all new 2010 stainless steel
super deluxe body and fully kitted out to make the operators job
easier and safer at the road side. Boniface pride themselves in
looking at all aspects of recovery and talk to operators to make
their trucks safe and easy to operate.
The
chassis used for this build is a Renault Kerax 8x4 440HP with a
global cab, Renault trucks assisted with the axle uprate and
higher GTW making this chassis an ideal unit for the Recoverer
Trident equipment. Since the front axles had been uprated
Boniface took the decision to make a ballast front bumper that
would look aesthetically pleasing and therefore, become an
integral part of the truck. Ballast
was also fitted behind the cab to make this a true high
performance lifter. The pictures show the ERF in all its glory
when it was new and the replacement Renault Kerax.
The
Sidewinder product
from its early days on this ERF of Hammonds has become a great
success world wide with higher capacities ‘Sumo’ to give
high stability on today’s Rotators, available with twin,
single or no winch option. Miller Industries have taken this
idea and is widely used by operators n the USA. The Side pulling
capability of this unit gives the operator the flexibility to
keep running lanes on busy roads open and gives the added
ability to work in confined spaces on narrow roads. |

IDEAS IN ACTION FROM BONIFACE
- SP 8,000
Ever thought that a second winch on a transporter would make it a more versatile unit with the capability of serious recovery operations rather than simply pull up and go?With this in mind Boniface and Miller Industries have designed the SP 8000 unit which fits neatly behind the cab of the vehicle and gives the option of high level side winching and high level winching on to the bed. An 8,000lb winch is fitted with an interchangeable fairlead for use nearside and offside.
Hydraulic or manual legs deployed at the side of the vehicle give the unit a firm foot print allowing for serious side winching in situations like ditches and on busy motorways; this then allows the lanes to be kept clear and hence the traffic flowing.
This is just one of many new features that Boniface are working on to give the operator the edge while working in difficult and indeed dangerous surroundings & situations.

Sovereign
Adds Another Boniface Product to Keep London Moving!
One
of the most experienced recovery operators in the London region,
Sovereign Recovery, have a wealth of knowledge at picking up buses –
particularly when needing to move them swiftly - which is essential to
keep London’s road moving! The
proprietor of the company, Doug Pope, is a recent convert to Boniface’s
Interstater range of
products. He finds the
low profile boom and long reach invaluable when having to extend below
all manner of buses that he encounters during the course of his day.
His latest example is a particularly pretty Mercedes1848 that
was converted to a 6 x 2 using Boniface’s
own Pioneer axle - the
independently air sprung trailing axle which reduces the rear overhang
of a recovery vehicle; in fact, this well tried system has other
advantages which Doug is now able to testify, these include – the
weight transfer that manifests itself when the axle is lifted making
the front axle lighter and the extra manoeuvrability around London’s
often narrow and very busy streets that this system provides.
Sovereign have to get to the scene of a breakdown and move the
casualty quickly, as a result they always specify Cab Command coupled
with a rear view camera. The driver of the recovery vehicle is able to lower the boom
and reverse under the bus on arrival at the scene without having to
get out of the cab - this significantly reduces Sovereign’s turn
round times.
|

|
|
The
presentation of Sovereign’s fleet of recovery vehicles is an important
factor of Doug’s strategy; he knows that Boniface
can custom build the bodywork to suit both the style of the chassis and
the equipment. When
Sovereign’s striking graphics are applied to the vehicle the total
impression given to potential customers is a useful aid in Doug’s
marketing. Boniface’s
bodywork is all manufactured from stainless steel – something that has
been standard for many years; this provides a durable foundation that
will give Sovereign many years reliable service or excellent re-sale
value.
Boniface
products and Sovereign’s services are a significant factor in keeping
London moving! |

Boniface exhibited their 2010 heavy duty body
Boniface
exhibited their 2010 heavy duty body at the European Tow Show in June with a
lot of new features to improve the access to the accessories stowed in the
lockers. The door style is now "wardrobe" on the front two lockers
on both left and right hand side, these improve access and allow heavy items
to be positioned in places that ease the load on the operator when removing,
Boniface have also concentrated on keeping all the most used tools within
one locker, something that also makes the operators life easier. With the
new body comes a range of internal features, like the swing out chain and
sling storage on the off side, this reveals access to the timber stowage
that is now conveniently positioned behind the locker, utilising the space
between the chassis and the back edge of the body which has previously been
unused.
The
Renault featured here is for sale and represents very good value for
money, it also is compliant with a number of essential regulations that are
necessary today, BSEN 14492 winches and a lifting capacity of over 7 tonnes
within the rear axle capacity.
Boniface
have also concentrated on forward ballast, this keeps the overall weight of
the vehicle down and improves rear axle capacity, the Kerax chassis lends
itself well to this method of ballasting, in fact once painted many people
think the ballast is part of the chassis.

Another Champion For Nottingham Breakdown
Tough, durable,
dependable, reliable and stylish are just a few words used to describe the
Champion aluminium slidebed from Boniface Engineering. Nottingham
Breakdown is a long standing customer of Boniface and they have been
impressed with both the products and service Boniface have provided over the
years. Mick & Darren (the co-owners of Nottingham Breakdown) sourced
this very clean low mileage Mercedes 815 chassis cab and due to their
existing Champion bed doing such a great job had no hesitation in ordering
another one. Once the chassis had been received at Boniface, the equipment
was fitted in a little over 2 weeks – just as promised when they placed
their order. The Champion is
rated at 3.5 tonnes and is tough enough to withstand constant heavy usage by
the busiest operators for both Police and general club work. As standard it
comes with a galvanised subframe which reduces the need for painting, lever
controls for all functions and radio remote for the winch. This build for
Nottingham Breakdown also included the optional 2nd car lift and extra
locker boxes. There are numerous additional items which can be fitted to
tailor the equipment to an operators exact requirements and Boniface are
always pleased to offer help and advice. The champion bed is ideally suited
to chassis within the range of 6.5 to 10 tonnes GVW. Other steel and
aluminium beds are available for larger and smaller chassis cabs. For
further information on this or any other product in the Boniface product
range, call them on 01842 754232.

The Quick Step - Another
Innovation From Boniface
Boniface is always
at the forefront of equipment design and innovation within the
recovery industry their products being used all over the world. Recent
trends have seen bigger, higher capacity bodies being built to cope
with the stowage of the ever increasing levels of equipment that must
be carried to meet contractual requirements.
It is often the case that operators favour large cabs which
provide a greater presence on the road and whilst creating impressive
looking vehicles, Boniface build large stainless steel bodies to
compliment the host chassis. Part of the custom body building process
involves stowing equipment within the lockers – often in high up
spaces that the typical operator struggles to reach. To eleviate this
situation, Boniface have designed the Quick Step - a simple
fold out step which fits over the vehicle’s road wheel to provide
quick and convenient access to those hard to reach places. The Quick Step is
made from a lightweight but sturdy construction, and folds flat making
it easy to stow when not in use. Just one of the changes we’ve made
for 2010! For further information on this new innovative item call
them on 01842 754232.

New Boniface T35 Transporter For Spiteri
Chris Spiteri & Sons of Newport in South Wales have recently taken
delivery of this impressive Citroen based T35 transporter. Chris
Spiteri commented that the vehicle is phenomenal, returning very
impressive fuel economy figures and also reducing job times on long
deliveries. At just 3.5
tonnes GVW, the vehicle does not require an Operator’s Licence or a
tachograph. It can be driven by anyone with a car licence regardless
of when they passed their test and is very simple to operate via the
standard radio remote control. The T35 tilt and slide body utilises a
single body ram for its operation and a galvanised steel chassis with
an integral body subframe keeping the running height down as well as
reducing the loading angle of the bed.
This is the smallest vehicle Boniface produce and is available
on Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot and front wheel drive Transit chassis cabs.
It has been a great success over the years with customers throughout
the UK - ranging from the largest recovery operator to the smallest
bodyshop.
We’re
sure Chris Spiteri and his team will have many years of profitable
service from this vehicle and like many of you will agree - Boniface
really are nice people to deal with!

Holmes 600R For Cockerills
Jim
Cockerill of Cockerills Recovery in Leicester has recently taken
delivery of this impressive Volvo fitted with a Holmes
600R Rotator. This medium duty wrecker is an ideal addition to
their fleet of Boniface products and will make light work of those
awkward recoveries where space is limited. The Holmes
600R has a 220° rotating top boom rated at 32,000lbs, twin
15,000lb hydraulic winches, rear stiff legs to anchor the vehicle
during hard winching situations and a 12,000lb capacity underlift capable
of moving anything from a car to a tractor unit. How many times do
you send a 6 or 8 wheeler to do the job of a smaller 4 wheeler which
is more efficient and has lower running costs? For those of you who
like the idea of a smaller more fuel efficient vehicle but maybe not a
rotator, Boniface Engineering have a range of similar sized vehicles
available including the Century 3212 which has the same lift and tow
capacities as the Holmes 600R and the Century 1624 which has a
slightly larger underlift. With rising fuel costs there has never been
a better time to add one of these vehicles to your fleet. To see how
their range of products can benefit your business just give them a
call - they really are nice people to deal with!

EUROTUNNEL
TURN TO BONIFACE
Railscape
the main contractor for the UK side of the Euro tunnel sought the assistance
of the sales team at Boniface to source a small vehicle to use in the Euro
tunnel, and this was a challenge that the Boniface Team took in there
stride. An ISUZU D max FPZ was sourced from one of our European partners who
had the very truck in stock. Information was given to our customer and the
order placed. Soon after John Coldwell Boniface Engineering’s Sales
Manager was on a plane headed for Spain to collect the truck, and within two
days of arriving in Spain the truck was safely back in the UK after traveling
1,000 miles to get home. An SVA test was completed on the vehicle and is now
ready to go into service on this cross channel route.
As
you will see by the pictures not only is this a good looking unit with

NEW
VEHICLE FOR WEDDINGTON COMMERCIALS
Warwickshire based Weddington Commercials have owned and operated Boniface equipment for a number of years and recently purchased their first ever brand new vehicle – a Renault Midlum fitted with a 6 tonne capacity 23’ aluminium Chevron slidebed with 2nd car lift. The Chevron aluminium slidebed is a very robust and durable product that offers good weight savings over conventional steel
slidebeds. It easily stands up to the most arduous recovery jobs and being
aluminium, never rusts so it will stay looking great for years to come. Weddington’s M.D. Gavin Davies commented that he has always liked the Boniface equipment and over the years has been impressed by the performance and reliability of their existing Boniface fleet which consists of both light and heavy products. He found the staff at Boniface were always happy to help and their excellent after sales service also played a key part in his decision making process. I’m sure Gavin like many others will agree, Boniface really are “nice people to deal with”.

PETER AND TOM KERLEY - TAYLOR THE BUILD
P J Kerley of
Norwich, Norfolk wanted a new accident unit and as Boniface
Engineering are such ‘’nice people to deal with’’ Peter
and Tom Kerley were able to visit Boniface’s Thetford factory and
discuss in detail their build - giving them first hand knowledge of
the build process and talking to the installation engineers to tailor
the build to suit their specific needs.
The
equipment chosen by Peter and Tom was the ever popular CHEVRON
Series 14 25’ steel slidebed with a 6t capacity.
Supplied complete with second car lift and ample stowage with
large lockers each side to accommodate all the equipment used at the
scene of road traffic collisions.
The bed was also fitted with the new style front crash bar
which houses not only the damage free lift frame but also the lift
clamps, enabling everything to be stowed neatly away in its own
purpose-built stowage space.
This
vehicle was delivered just before Christmas and has been flat out ever
since due to our wonderful English weather.

BONIFACE
SUPPLIES THE VERY FIRST POLYESTER BODIED RECOVERY TRUCK TO A FRENCH
CUSTOMER
Boniface
Engineering of Thetford in Norfolk, part of US based recovery vehicle
specialist Miller Industries Towing Equipment, has recently supplied its
first ever polyester bodied unit to French company Sadra Sud of Beziers.
The
polyester components were developed and manufactured by Miller's French
subsidiary, Jige International, prior to being shipped to Boniface for
assembly onto a Century 1060S, 2-stage rotating boom recovery unit
mounted in turn onto a Volvo FH16-660, 8 x 4 chassis.
Besides
the obvious elimination of corrosion, the choice of polyester offers
several advantages over traditional metal bodywork, not the least being
the saving in weight which is able to provide a useful increase in rear
bogey carrying capacity. Also, because the material is moulded rather
than fabricated, Jige has been able to incorporate more style into the
exterior design at very little extra cost as well as impregnate all
steps and walk areas with a grip material for maximum safety when
working during adverse weather conditions.
Other
features of this new-style recovery truck include forward mounted
aluminium roller shutter locker doors, polyester up-and-over locker
doors at the rear and zenon worklights mounted on the rotating boom in
order to provide enhanced illumination for night working.
In
addition, the unit is equipped with Miller's highly effective safety
stability system which automatically prevents the boom from being
overloaded plus a central locking system which links all external locks
with the prime mover's cab doors.
The
finished vehicle, which weighs in at 33,500 kg is equipped with a
Eurotow 42 underlift and a total of five winches - a pair of 22 tonne
pull units on either side of the boom, a 30 tonne drag winch on the
underlift and a further pair of 14 tonne units integrated into the Sumo
Sidewinder front stabiliser legs.

FIRST BONIFACE HEAVY-DUTY RECOVERY VEHICLE FOR KETTERING RECOVERY SERVICES
Boniface Engineering of Thetford in Norfolk has recently supplied a Recoverer Trident to a Northamptonshire based, family owned company which currently operates a fleet of 19 recovery vehicles as well as carrying out car and commercial MOT's and repairs.
Kettering Recovery Services (KRS) of Kettering, Thrapston and Northampton was founded some 30 years ago by the late Geoff Hill and has since grown to become an international operator with some 75% of its business now devoted to roadside and recovery work.
The new truck is KRS's very first heavy-duty unit from Boniface, although the company has used its slide bed trucks for almost 10 years with complete satisfaction.
Commenting on the new vehicle, KRS director Dave Bown said: “We decided to replace one of our old heavy-duty units with a new front-line truck that would not only do everything we needed but also provide a much more professional image for the company's activities.”
The Recoverer Trident is mounted on a 6 x 2, Euro 5 Mercedes Actros chassis with a lifting axle for improved manoeuvrability when positioning at a job and is equipped with a top boom, rear stabiliser legs and a pair of 2-speed, 50 tonne capacity winches.
“I'm over the moon with the truck”, says Mr. Bown, “And we've dedicated it to the company's founder by having his name signwritten on the cab and even registering it with a number containing his initials.
Mr. Bown was also happy to point out that he is now looking to purchase another similar heavy duty unit next year”
